Canine Distemper

Canine Distemper Virus

This is a very contagious virus that affects multiple areas in the body. It is a severe disease that is hard to treat once an animal is infected, and is often fatal. It can affect the lungs, intestines, and brain with the most common symptoms being discharge from the eyes and nose, fever, coughing, diarrhea and vomiting. It can become very severe leading to seizures and paralysis. Even if an animal survives infection, the affected body systems are often permanently damaged. The vaccine to protect against this virus is very successful at preventing disease. Because of the vaccine, this disease is not one that we see often, but we continue to vaccinate for it because it is carried by wild animals. We repeat this vaccine every year.
